( - Its tough to win in the NFL so dont expect any team to apologize when its handed a break or two. After Week 15 it looked like fate mapped out its easiest route for the Baltimore Ravens when it came to the jumbled postseason picture for the AFCs final wild-card slot. A less-than impressive 20-12 Week 15 home win over what turned out to be a 3-13 Jacksonville team improved the Ravens to 9-5 with games at Houston and Cleveland on the docket. While both the Texans and Browns had been more than competitive at times this season, each was in disarray at the quarterback position. Houston was down to its fourth signal caller, Case Keenum, after both Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Tom Savage were lost to injury against Indianapolis, and Cleveland was ping- ponging back-and-forth between the limited Brian Hoyer and the ill-prepared Johnny Manziel. The Ravens, though, couldnt take advantage against Keenum, who was brought back by the Texans from the St. Louis Rams practice squad only after the injuries to Fitzpatrick and Savage, as Joe Flacco had one of his worst days as a professional in South Texas, completing only 21 of his 50 passes for 195 yards. We got our (butts) kicked, plain and simple, Flacco said after what seemed like a debilitating 25-13 setback. They brought a ton of pressure up the middle and we never got into a groove . The hiccup in Houston meant Baltimore needed a win in the regular-season finale against the Browns and help in the form of a Chargers loss at Kansas City, almost a logical scenario. After all fate continued to smile on the Ravens when Manziel was shut down for the season with a hamstring injury and it became clear that Hoyer wouldnt be able to go in Week 17, making undrafted rookie free agent Connor Shaw the only option for Cleveland at quarterback. Meanwhile, Arrowhead Stadium is one of the toughest places to play in the NFL and the Chiefs had plenty to play for because their postseason hopes were still alive, albeit in a convoluted scenario of a win, coupled with losses by both the Ravens and Texans. A significant hurdle emerged, though, when it was revealed that Kansas City signal caller Alex Smith would be forced to miss the regular-season finale with a lacerated spleen, suffered during the third quarter of Kansas Citys Week 16 loss to Pittsburgh. The veterans absence meant Chase Daniel was being counted on in what was just his second NFL start. All we can do is worry about ourselves, Flacco said. Daniel, a Mizzou product who spent four years under the learning tree of Drew Brees before arriving in the Midwest, proved to be up to the task in KC. He was hardly spectacular but steered clear from the game-changing mistake and rode a ferocious pass rush to a 19-7 win, eliminating the Chargers. That left everything on the table for Baltimore, which was down a TD to Shaw and Co. with potentially only 15 minutes left in its season. Flacco, who already has plenty of postseason work and a Super Bowl title on his resume, awoke late, tossing both of his touchdown passes in the fourth quarter as the Ravens rallied past the Browns 20-10. Down 10-6, Flacco found Torrey Smith over the top for a 53-yard gain before going right back to the big-play receiver for a 16-yard score with less than eight minutes remaining, a sequence that essentially punched Baltimores postseason ticket. Youre watching (the Chiefs-Chargers game) like, We have a good opportunity here that were wasting right now, Smith said. We got back on track, made a couple big plays and got the momentum back. As the clock expired in Baltimore, time was also ticking down in Kansas City and the fans at M&T Bank Stadium erupted. The Ravens were back in the postseason for the sixth time in seven years under coach John Harbaugh after missing the party in 2013. Just a gutsy effort, Harbaugh said. Faith and guts. Our guys kept faith and fought to the end. That faith and those guts had wed good fortune and dont expect the Ravens to apologize for it. It feels good, man, Flacco said. I remember sitting at home last year a week from now, and it didnt feel very good. That at least wont be happening this year. Avonte Maddox Jersey . There is no argument that the line of Pacioretty, David Desharnais and Thomas Vanek was one of the hottest in the NHL leading into the post-season, and they did combine for three goals and seven points, but it was the depth of all four lines that helped propel Montreal. Markus Wheaton Eagles Jersey . -- Jonathan Vilmas season is over and his future on the football field is in doubt. . Bale has had a successful debut season in Spain, and Ancelotti appears ready to reward him with a starting role on Saturday. Ancelotti says "Gareth had some problems at the beginning (of the season) but when he found good physical condition he scored a lot of goals, he had a good impact on the team. Custom Eagles Jerseys . The team of Lars Nelson, Daniel Richardsson, Johan Olsson, and anchor Marcus Hellner cruised to victory in the 4x10 km event, winning in a time of one hour, 28 minutes, and 42. Dallas Goedert Eagles Jersey . In a matter of days, he went from unwanted to wanted, from fired to hired, from discarded by the Philadelphia Eagles with reputation tarnished to rock star treatment and a new fat contract from the Washington Redskins. SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The start of the San Francisco 49ers three-day mandatory minicamp was overshadowed by the players who were absent. Two-time Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis and right guard Alex Boone skipped Tuesdays activities. Both starters are seeking raises despite two years left on their contracts. Cornerback Eric Wright, a seven-year veteran who played in seven games for the 49ers last season, announced his retirement. Wright said in a statement released through the team that he "no longer had the same passion" for the game. While Wrights announcement came as a surprise in the locker room, Davis and Boone are far bigger contributors to a 49ers team that has Super Bowl aspirations. Coach Jim Harbaugh said he appreciates players who show up for the voluntary workouts in the off-season but expects everybody in attendance for the mandatory meetings. He said he was disappointed that Davis and Boone are not at the minicamp. "Not the decision that I envisioned being the 49er way," Harbaugh said. "Really nothing more to be said about it. The focus will be on whats going on here." Players can be fined nearly $70,000 if they miss all three days of the minicamp, per the NFLs collective bargaining agreement. If Davis and Boone continue to hold out, they set the stage for what could be a major distraction leading into training camp next month for a franchise that has avoided such contract disputes the past few seasons under Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke. Neither Davis nor Boone was present during the first eight weeks of the teams voluntary program. Davis sacrificed a $200,000 bonus and Boone $50,000 for missing the workouts. And while both are seeking new deals, Davis has been the most vocal about his situation. "In 2010 I signed a five-year, $37 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed. It was the biggest contract for a tight end in league history. Four years later, and Im playing at a higher level than I was then, which brings me to why Im holding out," Davis wrote in a guest column for on Monday. "Its all about getting paid what you deserve. Its not that complicated. I want the 49ers to win the Super Bowl, and I want to be on the field this summer working toward that goal, but I have to worry about my future first." "Most of my teammates and many players in the NFL understand that. A few dont," Davis continued. "Behind closed doors, theylll say theyre all about the team and would run through a brick wall for the organization.ddddddddddddBut when you look closer, theyre doing things to contradict themselves. I cant listen to anyone but my family and my advisors, because those are the people who are going to be there when football inevitably dumps me." Davis, who initially acted coy about skipping the teams voluntary off-season program, began making his displeasure known shortly before the 49ers announced they had given quarterback Colin Kaepernick a six-year contract extension through the 2020 season that could be worth up to $126 million. Davis, who is now 30 years old, had 52 catches for 850 yards and accounted for 13 of Kaepernicks 21 touchdown passes last season. The tight end has repeatedly talked about marketing his "brand" this off-season after signing a deal with Fantex, which sells shares of Davis "stock" to investors. The San Francisco company paid Davis $4 million in return for 10 per cent of his future earnings from football, commercial endorsements and other jobs that he may get during the remainder of his life. The 27-year-old Boone signed a contract extension while he was a backup tackle in November 2011. He has two years remaining on the deal, which will reportedly pay him $2.25 million this season and $1.45 million next season. Most of their teammates responded in similar fashion when asked about their absences -- saying its a decision each player has to make on their own. Second-year safety Eric Reid, whose locker is next to Wrights, said it was a little surprising when he heard Wright was considering not playing anymore. Wright had been competing for the job vacated by former starters Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown, who both signed with the Oakland Raiders in free agency. The 49ers are treating minicamp as an opportunity for others to make an impact. Vance McDonald and Garrett Celek are expected to receive most of the practice repetitions behind Davis at tight end. Joe Looney is competing at the guard spot, while tackle Jonathan Martin is receiving some time at guard. Daniel Kilgore also can play centre and guard. Tramaine Brock, Chris Culliver, Perrish Cox, Chris Cook, Darryl Morris and rookies Dontae Johnson and Kenneth Acker are competing at cornerback. "Its next man up," 49ers offensive co-ordinator Greg Roman said. "Thats how it goes."
